- Safe (that's Cory's)
- Not dingy (that's mine)
- Close to stuff/tram line
- Cool neighborhood
- $500/mo for 3-4 rooms plus bathroom and kitchen
- Friendly neighbors
- Enough kitchen counter space for Cory to work his magic
We found a couple of online listing sites and started looking. That's where my 'not dingy' preference came from ... a lot of the postings in our price range in the neighborhoods we wanted looked pretty dingy and depressing.
Last night we called about a really cute furnished place but it had already been rented. I called about that one in French.
Then Cory called the latest one on the rental list (surely it wouldn't already be rented if it was just listed a couple of days ago, right?!) in Arabic. He said it was available and asked if we wanted to come see it right away - we hopped in a taxi and off we went!
I know they say you shouldn't buy the first thing you see, but we were charmed.
Isn't it lovely!?
The neighborhood is amazing, it's right by the tram line, it's got 2 bedrooms, and it's $500/mo on the dot.
We called this morning to set up an appoinment to meet with the property owner. Stay tuned!
UPDATE: if all goes well, we move in next week!

Awesome find! Love hearing about the process :)
ReplyDeleteHere's what the district officials have to say about the area (via Google translate):
ReplyDeleteHassan district is situated on a hill overlooking the valley of Bouregreg and down to the city center / Medina. It is bounded on one side by the Chellah, the Royal Palace and the "Departments" neighborhood and the other by the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum Mohammed V.
This area (eg neighborhood residence ) has many embassies (United States , Turkey, Belgium, Italian Cultural Institute , ...) and is therefore more secure.
Most tourist sites in Rabat, including the Medina can be reached within 20 minutes on foot.
The houses , medium size with small gardens, date mostly from the Protectorate . They often only have a fireplace as a heating system. Rents are relatively reasonable.
Three French primary schools (Chenier, Camus, Ronsard) and the Spanish school, are located in this district. Nurseries in the area are not very popular with the international community. Note however the recent opening of a preschool in Spanish.
Many cultural sites are accessible (private galleries, British Council, American Language Center, French Institute, Villa des Arts , the Cathedral library , etc ...).
You will not find Hassan latest trendy shops. But for everyday, the area is full of small shops (grocery , post office, butchers, chemists , pharmacies ... ). The two supermarkets are the reference Label Vie located in the heart of Hassan and the Marjane Bourgreg.
The best places in the area are the fishmonger " Hassan Tower " and the flower market of Pietri instead.
sounds intriguing. good pick, guys. I especially like the 'safe' comment.
